What in the heck IS “Upcycling” anyway?
“Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. “ Wikipedia But why would anyone choose to upcycle old, throw away items? We at Curbside Treasures have always been recyclers; taking things that have been discarded, fixing them up and giving them a new life. But all of this changed after our son outgrew his antique cot…after only one year! Not being quite ready to get rid of it, the master craftsman of the house suggested that we pull it apart and make something else….a jewellery box that would be an heirloom. Wow….what a great idea! Now, instead of carting around an old cot for 25 years in the hopes of reusing it for grandchildren, I have a beautiful jewellery box that I use every day. Over the years we’ve always kept an eye peeled for good old solid wood furniture to recycle, or upcycle. Because these items have been loved for a long time….and it saddens us to see them abandoned like that! So why not take that old piece – the kids cot, Nanna’s old dresser, or that daggy old coffee table that your favourite Uncle Fred gave you – and have it transformed by us at Curbside Treasures into something you can actually use…and love?
